Universal Monster: The Phantom’s Curse Slot Machine
The Universal Monster: The Phantom’s Curse slot machine by NetEnt pays homage to the classic musical production of The Phantom of the Opera. As you’d expect, the game is suitably dark and mysterious for the subject matter. It also has a load of great special features to keep players engaged.
The slot itself is played over five reels and four rows. Winnings are awarded for matching symbols along one of the 20 win lines. Let’s have a closer look at some more specifics.

Universal Monster: The Phantom’s Curse Review
|Theme:||Phantom of the Opera|
|Our Rating:||4 / 5|
- Great theme. As a fan of The Phantom of the Opera, I might be biased, however.
- Loads of innovative special features. This gives the game a lot of replay value.
- The bonus games are somewhat trickier to understand than they are on many slot machines.
- None of the great music from the original musical!
The top jackpots on the Universal Monsters: The Phantom’s Curse are all awarded for matching five of the same high value symbols along a win line. The symbols themselves have been inspired by the characters and objects from the classic musical production of The Phantom of the Opera. We’ve listed the prizes for hitting each five-of-a-kind combination below:
- Phantom = 200x the line bet.
- Christine = 100x the line bet.
- Ring = 60x the line bet.
- Flower = 50x the line bet.
- Mirror, or Dagger = 40x the line bet.
“Wild” symbols will substitute for all symbols except “Scatter” and “Bonus” symbols. The following symbols also share the same payments and create win line combinations with one another: Mask, Stacked Mask, Masked Phantom, Stacked Phantom, and Stacked Christine.
They all pay the following amount of coins per win line: five matching symbols = 200, four matching symbols = 50, and three symbols = 15.
Stacked Bonus Symbols
During the main game, both the first and last reel can contain Stacked Bonus Symbols. These are not present during the Free Spins mode though.
There are three different types of Stacked Bonus Symbols. The Stacked Phantom will appear on the first reel only, meanwhile, the Stacked Mask and Stacked Christina symbols will appear on the last reel only.
Pick and Click Bonus
The Pick and Click bonus game is triggered when the Stacked Phantom symbols lands fully on reel one and the Stacked Christine symbol lands fully on reel five.
The bonus round has two stages. In the first, the player can choose between eight roses. Some of them reveal coin wins and others reveal blocker symbols. After the player chooses a blocker symbol in stage one, they move to stage two.
In stage two of the bonus game, the player must choose one of three mirrors. The mirrors hide multiplier amounts of between 1x and 3x. The multiplier awarded is applied to the winnings from the first stage.
Players should note that the maximum win from the Pick and Click bonus round is 7,200 coins.
Masked Phantom Re-Spin
The Masked Phantom Re-Spin is triggered when a Stacked Phantom symbol lands fully on reel one and a Stacked Mask symbols lands fully on reel five.
The Bonus Stacked Symbols, as well as the Mask symbols and Phantom symbols visible during the spin that activated the re-spin, turn into “Wilds” and stick on the reels for one free re-spin.
Players should note that no bonus symbols or “Scatters” will appear on the reels during the re-spin. In addition, no bonus games can be triggered during the re-spin.
Landing three “Scatter” symbols anywhere on reels one, three, and five simultaneously will trigger Free Spins. During this bonus feature, a chandelier hangs by ropes appearing next to the five reels with each rope connected to a certain reel.
Landing a Masked Phantom symbol on a reel cuts that section of rope and highlights the reel connected with that section.
After the rope has been cut for a reel, subsequent Masked Phantom symbols appearing on that reel will not lead to another rope being cut on a different reel.
When all five ropes next to the reels are cut, the chandelier falls and the Free Spins round ends.
Players should note that the Masked Phantom symbol acts as a “Wild” during Free Spins. When one lands on a reel and cuts the rope, all Masked Phantom symbols on that reel become fully stacked from the next spin. They will remain stacked for the remainder of the Free Spins session.
In addition to the higher value symbols, the Universal Monsters: The Phantom’s Curse slot machine also features some that don’t pay quite as handsomely. These have been inspired by the suits of a standard deck of playing cards:
- Heart, Club, Diamond, Spade = 20x the line bet.
The number of win lines is fixed on the Universal Monster: The Phantom’s Curse slot. This means that players can only adjust the number of coins bet on each win line, as well as the value of them. The maximum and minimum coin values are £1 and 1p respectively. Meanwhile, the highest and lowest number of coins bet per line is 10 and one respectively.
This means, with all values set to their lowest, the smallest possible bet per spin is 20p. Conversely, with all values set to their maximum, the largest possible wager per turn is £200.
All told, the Universal Monster: The Phantom’s Curse slot machine is a great title. Thanks to its strong imagery, its great special features, and its unusual theme, this is one offering from NetEnt that has bags of replay value.
A slight caveat is that some of the features aren’t so easy to understand at first. It might take players a couple of reads of this article or the game’s information screen to fully understand what’s going on. Oh, and the inclusion of some of the tunes from the original score would be most welcome too!
