How Do Casino Bonuses Work?
Casino bonuses are not all exactly the same – there are in fact three main types which will be discussed in detail later – but they offered by all online casinos and for the same reasons… to get you through the door and playing the machines.
It’s no bad thing to be attracted by bonus offers but it’s important to find the biggest and best available.
The main type of offer is a welcome bonus (deposit x and get x in bonus cash), which is used to encourage you to join a particular site, however reload bonuses and loyalty bonuses are also both commonly available to casino players.
All bonuses come with wagering requirements which are basically criteria you must meet to be able to withdraw the bonus cash. These requirements are the single most important thing about any bonus (slots bonuses are notorious for high requirements so make sure you check before you sign up).
Casino Bonus Wagering Requirements
Wagering requirements differ slightly from one bonus to another but in general stipulate a minimum amount which a player must stake through the site before they are able to withdraw any bonus amount or any winnings related to a bonus.
Why do casinos enforce them? It’s to stop you signing up, depositing money, claiming the bonus and withdrawing it all straight away.
They’re not stupid you know!
The amount stipulated by any wagering requirement is usual given as a multiple of either the original bonus amount or the original bonus amount AND the original deposit for matched deposit bonuses. That wagering requirement is generally then needed to be completed within a certain time frame in order for withdrawal to be made.
Miss the deadline and the bonus is withdrawn.
Here’s an example:
A good way to understand exactly how this works in practice is to look at an example bonus which does have such wagering requirements applied…
Lets take the All Out Slots new player casino bonus as an example, it’s 100% deposit bonus up to £100 (meaning it offers bonus funds exactly equal to the amount of the player’s first deposit up to a max of £100).
The wagering requirements which All Out Slots casino impose are equal to 20 times the amount of the bonus AND the initial deposit, and must be completed within 30 days.
So if you deposit £100 you get a £100 bonus with wagering requirements of 20 x 200 (total deposit amount + bonus) = 4000. You must wager £4,000 worth of bets (win or lose) before you can withdraw your bonus cash.
A note on casino wagering requirements:
It is also important to realise that online casinos typically also make it so that different types of game contribute differently to wagering requirements.
In general the less house edge a game has the less it counts towards wagering requirements.
If wagering requirements stipulate that one type of game (slots) contributes 100% and another only 50% (roulette), then £100 wagered on the first will contribute £100 and £100 on the second contributes only £50.
The good news is that slot machines universally count 100% towards wagering requirements. So if you’re just playing slots there’s no need to worry about this.
Different Types Of Bonuses For Slots
As mentioned above there are three main types of bonus for slot machine players. Take a look and decide which suits you best.
1) Deposit Bonuses
The most common type of casino bonus and generally presented as ‘new customer offers’ or ‘welcome bonuses’.
Deposit bonuses involve the casino awarding bonus funds based on the amount a player deposits into their account. Normally 100% of that deposit amount is paid in bonus cash but it can sometimes be higher or lower depending on the promotion in question.
Typically, the bonus funds credited are not immediately withdrawable and in order to be able to withdraw them or any winnings associated with their use, the player must meet certain wagering requirements – as we have described in great depth above.
There are a number of notable benefits related to this type of promotion:
- Casino’s use them to attract new customers and compete with each other to have the best offers – this means better deals for players.
- To compete bonus amounts and percentage are increased – bigger bonuses ftw!.
- Players can control the amount of bonus cash they claim by selecting their first deposit amount.
- Players can control what size of wagering requirements they want to have (again by selecting first deposit amount carefully).
On the flip side of that coin there are a couple of downsides to look out for:
- These bonuses will always have wagering requirements and some are VERY high (always check T&C’s before signing up).
- Wagering requirements are usually calculated from deposit + bonus amount.
- If a player attempts any kind of withdrawal before wagering requirements have been met – even of only their own original deposit or a lesser amount – then their bonus funds and related winnings are usually forfeit.
2) No Deposit Bonuses
No deposit slots bonuses are quite simply exactly as their name suggests; bonuses paid by an online casino to a player without the player having to deposit any money first.
Where they are offered, these types of bonus are entirely aimed at attracting new players to a site and giving them an initial chance to play the site’s games without having to risk their own money.
In exactly the same way as deposit bonuses, the bonus funds credited are not made immediately withdrawable and are once again subject to the wagering requirements BUT for no deposit bonuses the wagering requirements are always SKY HIGH.
Why? Because online casinos aren’t in the business of giving money away (regardless of what they might have you think).
The major advantage of these types of bonus is the simple fact that they are provided to a player without the need for any initial investment by that player.
The major disadvantage is that the casino will make it virtually impossible for you to withdraw any winnings. Wagering requirements are often 100x and sometimes you even have to deposit your own money before you can withdraw (meaning the need to deposit is merely delayed rather than removed).
You probably don’t want to hear it but no deposit slots bonuses are best avoided!
3) Free Spins
The final main type of slots bonus are free spins bonuses. These can be of either a deposit or a no deposit variety.
What free spins bonuses do differently to the other types is that instead of crediting bonus funds, they simply provide a certain number of spins to be used at the online casino. These spins are generally limited to a specific game which has been linked to the particular promotion and depending on the offer can either be credited in response to a deposit or simply provided when a new account is created or some other criteria is met.
These types of bonus are generally aimed at attracting new players to try out a site or a game without risking their own money but as with all other types of bonus are still subject to wagering requirements (again usually high, especially if no deposit was needed).
Free spins can be a good source of extra bonuses or profit but you MUST check the terms and conditions because they can be as naughty as no deposit offers.
Are Slot Machine Bonuses A Scam or Rip Off?
All of the above should have gone a long way to helping any potential online casino players to fully understand the different bonuses which they may be offered along the way.
What remains the most common question from players however, is ‘Are slots and other casino bonuses a bit of a scam?’
Short answer is… technically no because T&C’s are laid out for all to read.
Longer answer is… they can be and here’s why:
- Wagering requirements can be sky high and darn right unrealistic – no doubt some players feel scammed by these if they didn’t check the T&C’s closely.
- Some games count more towards clearing bonuses than others – again without checking T&C’s you could feel cheated here.
- No deposit bonuses are essentially impossible to withdraw (hard to complain about something that’s free though).
- Free spins can be equally as hard to actually win money and get it withdrawn.
- Some restrictions mean you have to play a lot in a short space of time
- Withdrawals can massively affect your bonus rights.
Wagering requirements do make some slot bonuses a bit of a scam but technically the conditions are there for you to read and then decide if you want to participate or not. If the requirements are too great then skip the bonus and move onto a different site, there are plenty to choose from.
If there’s on thing you take away from this page about slot machine bonuses it’s READ the terms and conditions closely before you commit!
